Power from the Ground Up

Siegfried Substation

BACKGROUND

PPL Electric Utilities undertook a crucial initiative to upgrade the Siegfried substation, a 500kV/345kV yard integral to an expansive reliability project aimed at enhancing the overall grid performance in the Northeast United States. The primary objective of this undertaking was to bolster the substation's capabilities and contribute to the broader effort to improve the regional power infrastructure, ensuring greater reliability and efficiency for electricity consumers in the area.

Aproach

J.H. Hassinger was hired on as the excavation and concrete expert for the Siegfried substation project. The project presented a notable obstacle: rock. Every foundation necessitated either drilling into or excavating through rock. Overcoming this challenge demanded the deployment of two sizable drill rigs and going through numerous rock teeth. Despite the formidable nature of the project, the project was not only finished safely but also ahead of schedule.
