Growing the Grid

Boswell Substation

BACKGROUND

Minnesota Power needed to construct the Boswell substation as an essential step towards delivering increased quantities of renewable and cleaner energy to the neighboring regions. This project played a crucial role in the comprehensive transformation of a coal plant, which was undergoing a significant upgrade to transition to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy source.

Aproach

On the surface, the Boswell substation seemed to be a straightforward project. However, difficult subsurface conditions required the drilled shafts to be installed using slurry and a tremie. While the project offered many challenges, J.H. Hassinger was able to successfully complete the project to help Minnesota Power further foster a cleaner future and align with evolving energy standards.
